The Niagara Association for Christian Education is still in its youth, although its roots extend far into the past. Based on an approach to day school education that sees all of life as under the Lordship of Christ, NACE’s ancestor organizations in the field of education have been around for more than one hundred years. It’s foundation is the Word of God, and that has even more ancient roots!
The Niagara Association for Christian Education was formed in 1999 when the John Knox Memorial Christian School in Fruitland and the Smithville Covenant Christian School joined together to more effectively, and more stewardly, provide Christian day school education to the Christian families in the Niagara and East Hamilton areas.
John Knox opened its doors in 1961 to 99 pupils, with three dedicated staff members that taught grades one through eight. Since that time it has seen numerous periods of growth and expansion, both as a facility, and in terms of the people who became involved in its strong approach to Christian education. It currently has approximately 200 students from JK to grade eight who come from a wide variety of denominational backgrounds.
Covenant Christian began in 1988 as an offshoot of an overcrowded Wellandport Christian School. A group of Christian families had a vision for providing Christian education in the Smithville area and Covenant was born. It has provided a vibrant setting for students to explore God’s world in the light of God’s Word since its inception.
Recognizing God’s faithfulness throughout their early years, acknowledging the commitment and sacrifice of the schools’ founders, and anticipating God’s continued blessing, the two schools joined together under the Niagara Association for Christian Education. Our Association has enjoyed the unique strengths and contributions of both support communities in these early years and looks forward in hope and expectation to the years to come, so that we can endow the next generation with a vital, Christ-centred education.
